How to Remove Limescale and Hard Water Stains in Perth Homes

Limescale is mineral build-up from hard water. Soak it with white vinegar or a citric acid solution, leave it for 15 to 30 minutes, scrub gently and rinse. Use a squeegee after showers to keep it from coming back, and never use acid on natural stone.

If your shower screen looks cloudy no matter how often you clean it, you are probably looking at limescale. It is one of the most common cleaning problems in Perth homes, and it also builds up on taps, kettles, dishwashers and tiles.

Why Perth homes get limescale and stains

  • Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium behind as it dries. That is limescale.
  • Many Perth gardens and some homes use bore water, which can carry iron. It leaves orange or rust stains on paving, walls and glass.
  • Warm, dry weather dries water quickly, so mineral deposits form fast on glass and chrome.

How to remove limescale

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle, or dissolve a few tablespoons of citric acid in a litre of hot water.
  2. Spray the surface well. For vertical glass or taps, soak a cloth and lay it over the area.
  3. Leave it for 15 to 30 minutes. Heavy deposits may need longer.
  4. Scrub with a non-scratch sponge or soft brush, then rinse with clean water.
  5. Dry and buff with a microfibre cloth.
  6. For shower heads, bag a vinegar solution around the head with a rubber band and leave it for an hour.

Rust stains need a different approach. Use a product made for rust removal on paving and glass, following the label, or try lemon juice and salt on small areas. Do not use bleach on rust, because it can set the stain.

Keep it from coming back

  • Squeegee shower screens after each use.
  • Wipe taps and tiles dry with a cloth.
  • Run a monthly vinegar or citric acid cycle through your kettle and dishwasher.
  • Consider a water repellent glass treatment for shower screens.
  • Check sprinkler heads so they do not spray your windows and walls.

Frequently asked questions

A diluted vinegar solution is fine for short contact times. Rinse it off and dry the tap so the acid does not linger.

The glass may be etched by long-term mineral build-up, which does not wash off. Regular descaling and a squeegee help prevent it.

No. Bleach is for disinfecting, not for descaling, and it must never be mixed with acids such as vinegar.

Every one to two weeks for shower screens and taps if you have hard water, and monthly for kettles and dishwashers.
